It was the LSD experiments of the Sixties that identified "a God-shaped hole" in people. The issue is what we allow to fill that hole.
There is plenty to suggest people have taken to "Da Science" and some brands of environmentalism as religion, replete with millenarianism and faith in "a coming fundamental transformation of society, after which all things will be changed." Their scorn for non-believers is as fierce as the most dogmatic, rules-based religion.
One thing they lack — those who would build a society on atheism — is evidence of morality impervious to human manipulation. I don't doubt their goodwill or their rationality. Nor do I argue that morality is the exclusive province of religion. It does not come from God nor even directly from religion.
Morality is a byproduct, in my view, of the premise that God towers over us. If God made you, no other human can take away your rights. If on the contrary people are supreme, then what they say goes and they can fight til kingdom come. You can sit there mapping out your Rousseau humanism with minute rules for the perfect society -- and while you daydream someone can roll over you in a tank -- or unleash his killer robot dog -- and might maketh right, or at least top snout for a while.
The Billionaires are those daydreamers. What makes them dangerous is that they own Big Tech, Big Pharma and Big Educashun. They hope to put a lock on people and make their transhuman society permanent by cybernetic control of thought, economics, movement and opportunity and by injecting and quarantining the people into submission.
There is a thread on Reddit entitled, "I would be spiritually safer if I got a lobotomy than if joined a religion."
Recently a video resurfaced, falsely attributed to Bill Gates, in which some military unIntelligence types are discussing controlling fundamentalism by destroying a particular part of the brain that harbors spirituality. The resulting hullabaloo over "it's not Gates" distracts from the more worrying idea that people were discussing it. Nor is it new. Lobotomy was a "miracle cure" of the 1940s. Do you see how we are always told to wait for a miracle cure? That bit IS Bill Gates in a nutshell.
Lobotomy was supposedly shelved after jamming people's brains with implements produced zombie-like patients, including JFK's sister Rosemary who was "cured" of her high-spirits and a "forward" approach to sex. Lobotomy is back and has been since the 1990s.
Religion has always been a problem for governments but especially for highly uniform and regulated cybernetic societies. The usual tracts, 1984 and BNW make that clear. In his book Aldous Huxley replaces religion with soma and peans to "Our Ford". In real life, Huxley helped to run the MK-Ultra mind research of Sidney Gottlieb and Jolyon West that was specifically interested in gaining control the subconscious mind that regulates morality and ones preparedness to commit certain actions.
How to remove religion, or channel it in directions that can be controlled, has been an obsession of regimes since ancient times. In the early modern era, we have the examples of the Tudor regime which unleashed a ruthless programme of mass-societal re-education and propaganda, trying to keep religion but to bend obeisance to the State. There's a crucial issue here in the role of religion during rise of the State but no time for tangents.
Both Rousseau and Robespierre thought society could not function without a supreme being: Rousseau's deism was even emotional and good, which he saw as essential to the origination of good as opposed to purely self-interest. Of course, I'm simplifying in the interest of brevity. Robespierre saw a similar weakness in the Cult of Reason, being only a means to an end. Hence he got busy and balanced reason with its object, virtue, in the Cult of The Supreme Being, which was authorized by the National Convention in 1794 and became the official religion of France.
In comparison Hitler's controllers took the easy path, opting for a bastardized New Age humanism and appropriated the ancient wheel of life symbol. The Bolsheviks hijacked the communal, Christian aspects of Russian society and Stalin actually had a prayer written to himself for daily recitation in the schools. However when he began to demolish religious monuments the sight of people throwing themselves on the rubble became a public relations problem and he had to keep the church and settle for infiltrating it instead.

Only when Pol Pot read Rousseau, Robespierre and a smattering of Sartre did religion become as bloody as it had been under the Tudors as the Khmer Rouge sought to remold their own population so profoundly.
Why such effort to modify belief systems? Is it the God-shaped hole in humans that explains the urgency to shift the people from one religion to another? Whatever the answer, it is the same reason those who develop systems of government control consider liquidating the spiritual centre of the brain. it is the same tidy military minds who dream of uniformity. It is the same robber barons who dream of a compliant world of billions of consumers, all slaving for and buying from the oligarchy and their monopoly corporations.
They want to treat us as little more than livestock and there is the glaring hole in their logic: if our destiny is livestock, how did we develop greater faculties than cattle, why did we create those profound and wonderful texts and paintings throughout our time on this Earth, who will do that in the future and more importantly, if not to God's glory then to whose?
Even if you do not believe in God, this is the reason you should pray to be treated as if you do: as if you were born with rights that no human can take away; as if people owe respect to each other's body and property -- not based on some arbitrary hierarchy of victims, each one enjoying his or her 15 minutes as supreme martyr before being accused of some privilege, current or historic. Rather we should aspire to be treated with respect because we are all born with certain inalienable rights. It is only when the government fears a higher power, fears God or people who believe in an authority greater and more permanent than the state, that you have your rights.
